Don’t Let This Happen to Your Block!

This is what happens when a block is pushed to its limits and not properly maintained. In the photo, the plastic sheave shows severe damage—most likely caused by excessive friction from a rope running over it while it wasn't turning freely. Over time, the rope literally ground into the plastic, eating it away.
Why it matters:
This kind of wear not only destroys the block but can also quickly damage your halyards or sheets. It increases friction, reduces efficiency, and could cause a failure right when you need the system most.
What to do:
Inspect all blocks regularly
Make sure sheaves spin freely
Lubricate with a suitable marine-grade lubricant
Replace any blocks that feel stiff or show signs of wear
Remember: A seized block is a silent rope killer. Keep them spinning and your lines will thank you!
